Using Learning Design: It’s all in the tools
- It is five years since IMS released its Learning Design Specification and this week JISC CETIS held a meeting in Manchester this week to reflect on the last five years and to look at the tools currently under development which could bring the concept of learning design to a wider audience.

DesignShare: Linking up IMS Learning Design tools and systems
- We spoke to Mark Barrett-Baxendale from Liverpool Hope University about the JISC DesignShare Toolkit Demonstrator project, which focussed on the use and storage of Units of Learning defined by IMS Learning Design. Mark concludes that the project “demonstrated the utility of the service oriented approach” by linking the Open Document.Net repository to the Reload IMS Learning Design editor.

Educational Content SIG and Pedagogy Forum meeting report
- Liverpool Hope University hosted the joint JISC CETIS Educational Content Special Interest Group and Pedagogy Forum meeting last week which focused on the JISC Design for Learning programme (D4L). There were updates on the two Pedagogy Planner projects three projects at Liverpool Hope which are using the IMS LD specification, and reports were given on LAMS version 2 and the TENCompetence project.

JoinIn project: Sharing Groups between LAMS and Moodle
- Alex Little introduces the JoinIn project which has developed a toolkit which enables groups to be shared between the Moodle and LAMS open source VLEs.

JISC-CETIS 2006: Linking Formal and Informal learning
- A report from the JISC-CETIS conference held in Salford on the 14th and 15th November. This year, the focus was on "the gap between learning within the (fire)wall of a well-established institution and learning on the wild web and beyond."

The community sets priorities for the e-Framework
- The second JISC/CETIS Conference was held at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, on the 15th and 16th November. This, now annual, conference brings together many of the development community, particularly those working on JISC funded projects, along with domain experts and policy makers from further afield including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.

JIME special issue on Learning Design
- This special issue of JIME has been edited by Colin Tattersall and Rob Koper to build on the book 'Learning Design: A Handbook on Modelling and Delivering Networked Education and Training'. Articles relating to the chapters in the book report on ways in which Learning Design has been applied and the tools and techniques that have been developed to support this approach to design for learning. LAMS uses web services to integrate with VLEs
- A new version of LAMS has been released which includes web services interfaces to allow integration between LAMS and VLEs, including Moodle, Blackboard and Sakai. There are also new features such as the HTML noticeboard which allows teachers to put web content into LAMS noticeboard pages. Details of how to get a trial account and the LAMS support services that are available can be found on the LAMS web site.

A Review of Learning Design
- A Review of Learning Design:Concept, Specifications and Tools (May 2004) by Sandy Britain. This review introduces the concept of learning design and why it offers 'new possibilities for increasing the quality and variety of teaching and learning'. There is also an evaluation of the various learning design tools available as of May 2004. Some of these tools have been substantially developed since this report was written. JISC publishes the final report of the LAMS Practitioner Trial
- The report finds that the system can provide benefits in terms of teacher reflection and learner motivation in certain situations.

LAMS Practitioner Trial Final Report
- JISC funded a practitioner trial of the LAMS (Learning Activity Management System) with 40 practitioners from HE, FE and ACL (Adult and Community Learning) between July 2004 and March 2005. The evaluation focused on the question ‘Does the use of a learning design tool such as LAMS support effective practice in designing for learning?’ Dr Liz Masterman and Dr Stuart Lee the report authors conclude that (p 41): ‘We can position LAMS as a tool which practitioners can profitably add to the repertoire already at their disposal – promoting motivation and participation in some circumstances and with some groups of learners.’ This link opens a pdf version of the report

- This European project is supporting the adoption of open e-Learning standards for multiple learners and flexible pedagogies, and provides a space for people to participate in the implementation and adoption of the IMS-LD Specification.
