Examples of SOA in action at Tencompetence workshop

There were some interesting examples of how SOA is being applied to lifelong learning developments across Europe at the TENCompetence Open Workshop on Service Oriented Approaches and Lifelong Competence Development Infrastructures held last week at Manchester’s G-Mex centre.

The workshop was attended by delegates from across Europe who came to showcase work from the TenCompetence European project so far and to discuss service oriented architectures for supporting lifelong learning.

There was an interesting and varied programme with some 40 peer reviewed articles on systems to support competence development from clinical guidelines for doctors to e-portfolios for students.

Two stimulating keynote presentations opened the conference. Mark Stiles from Staffordshire University addressed issues of control and policy when introducing e-learning into institutions and discussed how too much control can stifle innovation. Mark proposed that a Decision Making Framework might allow institutional e-learning strategists to decide when to control, manage, facilitate, enable or simply to recognise e-learning activities.

Richard Millwood from UltraLab described the Ultraversity project, an online degree in Learning, Technology, and Research in which students aimed to improve their own work context. Richard outlined the five approaches upon which the degree was based (inquiry based learning, community online, patchwork text assessment, exhibition for dissertation and personalised learning) with some inspiring examples of coursework and stories of personal achievements.
