In an article in the ALT newsletter Sara de Freitas provides an introduction to a JISC review titled "Learning in Immersive Worlds: a review of game based learning."

The review scopes out the current use of games for learning in UK HE and post-16 education. Sarah concludes that more research is needed into how to encourage wider use of games in the sector:

"There is potential for learning with games and simulations and while the research to support the effectiveness of simulations is considerable, recent studies of using leisure games in learning contexts such as that by Egeneldt-Nielsen (2006) have found difficulties in terms of setting and fulfilling specified learning objectives."
