The key to the value of mobile devices for the practitioner is the ability to use e-learning resources in a greater variety of locations and in support of a range of pedagogical approaches. The attributes of mobile technologies have lent themselves especially well to motivating learners with low basic skills or little sense of belonging to traditional learning communities, but they also have the potential to engage and motivate a greater variety of learners, as is shown in the case studies in this section.

The role of these technologies in wider practice is still being explored, but the potential of immersive learning experiences within mainstream courses is of real interest. Currently, such activities are restricted to contexts such as museums and tourist attractions, but the example in A glimpse of the future points the way to considerably enhanced learning opportunities in mainstream education.
