Report on e-Learning and Pedagogy activities this quarter Design for Learning theme: activities current and completed 1.1 Projects arising from  HYPERLINK "http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=funding_01_06" Circular 01/06: Design for Learning Programme INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.jisc.ac.uk/images/spacer.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET  INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.jisc.ac.uk/images/spacer.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET  Following the release of Circular 01/06 in February, the following bids were successful, with work commencing during May 2006: a) Models of Practice (Phase 2) The project has been awarded to Glasgow CaledonianUniversity and will be led by Allison Littlejohn and Isabel Falconer in partnership with the SFC e-Learning Transformation project, TESEP,Professor Ron Oliver (Edith Cowan University) and Dr Lori Lockyer (University of Wollongong). It is due to be completed in spring 2007. b) Online Pedagogic Planner Two projects have been awarded: one to the Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning Unit (TALL), Oxford University Department for Continuing Education and Learning Technologies Group, Oxford University Computing Services, led by Marian Manton, Liz Masterman, David Balch and David White; and the second, led by Diana Laurillard and Tom Boyle, to the Institute of Education, University of London, and the Institute of Education, London Metropolitan University in partnership with LAMS International Pty Ltd. The two projects will develop proof of concepts for an online pedagogic planning tool from different approaches, the first focusing on the use of wikis and the second developing a course-level and session-level planning tool based on LAMS. The prototypes will be available in February 2007 which will then be developed further. c) Implementing and Evaluating Learning Design tools Five further projects to run over the next 10-18 months will explore the implementation and support requirements of learning design tools: The eLIDA CAMEL Project led by the University of Greenwich An Evaluation of Design & Implementation Tools for Learning (EDIT4L) from the Centre for Learning & Teaching, University of Southampton, and the Centre for Academic Practice, University of Warwick Sharing the LOAD (Learning Objectives, Activities and Designs) from the University of Cambridge and University of Nottingham Learning design for inquiry-based learning (DeSILA) - a situated evaluation of LAMS from the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences (CILASS) at the University of Sheffield The ALED Project (Authoring using Learning Design) from Swansea College and Gorseinon College Four technological development projects complement the above. These are: Constructing2Learn from the University of Oxford with partners London Knowledge Lab (Institute of Education, University of London) and Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia Supporting practitioners in producing IMS Learning Designs from Liverpool Hope University with partners Phosphorix Ltd and St Helens College Designs on Learning, designing for learning in a practice-based institution from Ravensbourne College Developing for Learning Design (DfLD) from The Open University, with partners Liverpool Hope University and the Open University of the Netherlands. d) Support project The support project will underpin the design for learning projects and play a key role in synthesising and sharing key outcomes. This project has been awarded to Cetis, Bolton University, and will be supported by Lisa Corley, Sheila MacNeill and Wilbert Kraan. e) Formative evaluation project The aim of this project is to evaluate the Design for Learning Programme and provide a summary of the lessons learned. This project has been awarded to Glenaffric Ltd and will run during the lifetime of the Programme.. Phase 2 of the interview schedule has now been completed and it is anticipated that the schedule will provide a broad spectrum of experience across post-16 and higher education. Four Higher Education Academy Subject Centres - economics, computing, geography, medicine, veterinary science and dentistry - are involved in the project which will be completed at the end of August 2006. This team also facilitated sessions under the Learner Experiences theme at the Online Conference in March 2006. 1.8 Learners voices Xube Productions are currently producing 5 video clips exploring what makes an effective e-learner. Update on other activities funded under the Pedagogy strand 2.1 Online Conference - Innovating e-Learning 2006: Transforming Learning Experiences 27 31 March 2006 The conference attracted 342 delegates from across the world with 50 presenters and facilitators. 294 participants logged one or more times during the actual conference week with a total of 2133 postings - a very high participation rate in what was judged by both presenters and delegates to be a very well-run and thought-provoking event. Experts Group The eighth Pedagogy Experts Group meeting will take place at Armada House in Bristol on 27 June 2006. The agenda will provide an overview of the new Design for Learning programme (see above) and updates and outcomes from the Learner Experiences projects. The date of the remaining meeting for 2006 is Thursday 26 October 2006 at the Lakeside Suite, Aston University. News from the Innovation and e-Learning Strand 4.1 Designing Spaces for Effective Learning Demand for this guide to learning space design for technology-rich learning has been high.
