A summary of the Skills Profiling Web Service project funded by the Distributed e-Learning strand.
Skills Profiling Web Service

Please describe the tool you are building:

The project will develop and populate a competency framework (expressed using IMS specifications) which will provide a common set of competencies that can be used by a number of learning management systems. After this a web service will be developed that will generate a questionnaire which can be used to profile a learner’s skills based on the framework, within a suitably equipped VLE. The log-book tools within the Bodington VLE will be enhanced to consume this service and offer a number of learner and teacher tools for both entering and browsing data. The service will be realised in a Medical context.

What problem do you see the development of this tool helping to address?

This web service will assist students in their own personal development planning and could be used by any e-learning system. The service will allow PDP content to be easily added to existing systems.

Who do you see the being the primary user(s) of this tool?

Students, course managers andVLE administrators in Medical Schools and Lifelong Learning departments.

How do you see your tool being used?

The SPWS tool will allow students and tutors to reflect on activities within Learning Management Systems.

To use your tool, what infrastructure etc (if any) will be needed? (ie - could it be used stand-alone? Would it need a VLE/other system to be in place?)

AXIS-based Web Service Client. Cannot be used stand alone.
